Creating Multiple Sources of Revenue
A service business is a good choice for a home business because of the ease in starting and low start-up costs. The problem with a service business is the time it takes to perform the service, and this puts limits on your revenue because of the time factor. To increase revenue, you can hire employees, add new revenue streams, or start another profitable business in addition to your service business.
When you look for a home business ideas, you need to look for something that will provide you with a good income, but earnings should not be the only criteria for selection. It is so important to choose something you can be passionate about; something that will bring satisfaction as well as income.
What if that choice just will not meet your income goals?
No where is it written that we only have to pursue one home business when 2 or more businesses would suit us better. Is it possible to run more than one business at a time? Certainly, but it takes some good organization.
Some business ideas just will not produce much in the way of earnings, no matter how much they are promoted. If you are a Notary Public, you can only charge a small fee and it would take dozens of people a day to make a living. This service is necessary and is a great add-on to another business but it is unlikely to produce enough income to live on.
What kinds of businesses will work together? You will need to analyze the time requirements of anything you are thinking of starting. There are only 24 hours a day that you can devote to your business. It is possible to have more than one service business if the time requirements are small for each. It is better if the services are related, or at least a logical association.
We have a pool service. We clean and maintain swimming pools for homeowners. In addition to that service we repair pool equipment. Repairs are infrequent so there is enough time to schedule one or two repairs a week. The third revenue stream we have is retailing pool chemicals to our service customers.
This only takes a few minutes at each stop. Adding these additional revenue streams has increased our bottom line without having to find new customers for a new business. There aren't any scheduling conflicts with our main service, because of the low time requirements of the other services.
One thing about the pool business: it is strictly a day job. This leaves evening hours for us to pursue other businesses. Both my spouse and I have taken our hobbies and used them to produce revenue. Hobbies are particularly suitable for working into your existing schedule, because you do these things anyway.
We have increased our income by developing additional revenue streams for our primary business and by pursuing other, non-conflicting businesses after hours. While our after hours businesses are still in their building stages, we are seeing the benefits of having more than one source of revenue. It relieves the financial burden of the slow season, when our income from our pool service drops.
What revenue streams can you add to your home business?
