FAQ
Working at home offers a flexible schedule, no commute, and more control of your life. The hardest part is getting started.
Where do I start?
Read everything you can find about starting a home business. Explore the Start-up help articles, and the Biz Ideas on this site. The Links page lists many sites with great information. Be sure to check them out, too.
A trip to the library will provide more sources of great information. Dozens of books have been written about starting, and running a home based business.
What about a work at home job?
These opportunities are few, and far between. Most often, an employee who is allowed to work at home has made the arrangement with his/her current employer. Some occupations lend themselves to working at home, such as commissioned sales positions (real estate, insurance, etc.) There are some companies that offer piece work to at home workers, but they want someone local to do the work. Rarely, will you find a legitimate home job advertised nationally, or online.
Can I work part time?
Yes and no. The start-up phase of your home business will require you to work many hours. After everything is in place, you may be able to work only part time but part time work will only produce a part time income.
What's the best business to start?
The best business is the one that is right for you. Try not to be swayed by promises. You have to choose something that you enjoy or you'll give up too soon.
How can I make money right away?
Starting a business takes time. You may not see a profit for several months, or more. If you need immediate income, work at a regular job and start your business after hours.
What licenses will I need?
Check with your local government offices, or small business development center, for information on licenses.
What business can I start with no start-up costs?
All businesses will require some investment. How much you have to spend is determined by the business you choose. Be wary of business opportunities that claim they are free to start. Often, the real costs come later, after you have made the commitment and are obligated to pay.
How do I get the money to start?
If you don't have enough in personal savings to start your business, then you will need to seek outside sources. Some people have financed their businesses with credit cards; a high interest way to go. If you can't qualify for a loan, then this might be an option.
The Small Business Administration has loan programs for small business, as do many local government agencies. If you are going to seek a loan, take the time to prepare a detailed business plan. You'll need this document to show the lending institution.
